Pneumatic cylinders provide linear or rotary motion using compressed air. The size of the cylinder depends on the mass to be moved and the required speed required by the application. The operating pressure present also plays a role in determining the size of a pneumatic cylinder.

Because of a high degree of standardization, "standard cylinders" are widely used. These are cylinders according to ISO standards. Examples are pneumatic standard cylinders ISO 6432 (mini cylinders), ISO 15552 (large cylinders up to a diameter of 320 mm) or ISO 21287 (short stroke cylinders). The standard cylinders are interchangeable with molded cylinders of other brands and can therefore be easily reordered.
