SteamVR Pro Tracker by Manus

As the Virtual Reality (VR) technology advances, the opportunities for VR experiences evolve as well. While the companies that provide the technical gear behind VR build newer and more innovative hardware, such as Oculus, Windows VR and HTC Vive, other parties enable reality behind the virtual worlds. Manus is such a company.

Manus designs and produces a range of state of the art supporting hardware for VR uses. These solutions include Motion Capture Gloves, which enable real-time finger data streaming, Polygon, a full-body system for motion capture and VR use and the SteamVR Pro tracker, which is designed for motion capture, virtual production and full-body VR. This article highlights the innovative story of the latter product as well as BIBUS’ role as supplier.

Cutting edge virtual reality

Since 2014 the company has been working to bring intuitive interaction to Virtual Reality. The cutting edge technology behind the motion capture equipment allows for truly immersive experiences by tracking hand and body movement in real-time. Manus’ Motion Capture systems are compatible with systems such as the HTC Vive, Xsense, Vicon, PhaseSpace and OptiTrack.

Manus universal mounting system

Manus developed a universal mounting system to easily and securely attach their products together, the SteamVR Pro Tracker. The connector utilizes BIBUS’ spring plunger to make sure the connection is secure .

An important aspect of the connector is the ease of installation and the compatibility with existing tracking ecosystems. Many technologies exist and are being used, and being compatible with most requires both a hardware compatibility, as well as a software integration.

Thanks to the universal mounting system, Manus can make sure the right hardware can be attached to their motion capture & vr gloves.

The spring plunger plays a key role in the attachment and securement of additional hardware. Spring plungers are machine parts that are used for positioning, securing, locking or uncoupling actions in machines and equipment. Important for the applications is the simple and quick fastening and securing of components, a great example is the SteamVR Pro Tracker.

A customer specific stainless steel spring plunger was designed by BIBUS and the manufacturer for Manus. The most important requisition for this component consisted of the dimensions and spring forces. BIBUS provided a spring plunger with the smallest possible length of 6 mm and a diameter of 3,5 mm.

BIBUS’ spring plungers

BIBUS supplies both a wide range of standardised spring plungers as well as customer specific solutions. The spring plungers vary greatly, in our range you will find spring plungers with or without head/collar, with various spring loads, balls and bodies made of various materials and with different attachment options.
