BIBUS in practice: usability on the tram

With open service counters in the trams, Hemlock has ensured that Amsterdam public transportation company GVB can provide better experiences to travelers. More than 150 of these counters have been installed in total. BIBUS is proud of the collaboration with Hemlock and the end result. This article explains the project and the role of BIBUS in this.

Hemlock Group

Hemlock is a company specialized in shop design and interior construction. The company's customers are assisted by Hemlock in design, development, project management, engineering, product and assembly. In addition to a love for technology, Hemlock and BIBUS share another common factor: the Bollenstreek as their home base.

A user-friendly focus on the tram

The reason for this project was GVB's wish to be able to offer more user-friendliness on the Amsterdam trams. The open service counters had to offer travelers more service as well as provide an ergonomic workplace, adapted to the wishes of the staff.

BIBUS and Hemlock have worked together to come to the ultimate solution for GVB: a multi-functional counter workstation. BIBUS' role was to supply the components for making the ergonomic foot sideboard adjustable. Because this sideboard is adjustable in height, the workplace can easily be ergonomically adjusted to the personal preferences of the GVB staff.

Designing the end result was a challenge for Hemlock. Among other things, ergonomics, tram technology, very limited space, durability and safety had to be taken into account. To meet the wishes of GVB and Hemlock, BIBUS has assembled and supplied special 10/40 lockable gas springs (based on type K gas springs) for this project.

Lockable gas springs

When controlled movement is important, lockable gas struts are often an excellent choice for height / position adjustment. The pre-configured lock allows the gas springs to be positioned at different points.

BIBUS supplies four types of customer-specific lockable gas springs, type B, type K, type P and type PK. The lockable gas springs used in the counter workstations of the GVB (type K) are characterized by the rigid blocking in the outgoing direction. In addition to this application, this type of gas springs is often used with adjustable backrests. The video belowshows the operation of type K lockable gas springs.
