BIBUS in practice: intelligent level-controlled drainage

This year too, the Netherlands is facing a precipitation shortage. As a result of record droughts, ditches fall dry, the groundwater sinks too far and the water quality decreases. The rainfall deficit is currently above average for the time of year. It's time for smart solutions to tackle the problem. The company G.J. de Blois is working in an innovative way on intelligent level-controlled drainage, so that precipitation can be retained and automatically removed again.

The drainage system is made possible with the help of products and expertise from BIBUS. In this practical application you can read more about the innovative solution of G. J. de Blois.

Specialist in water technology

G.J. de Blois processes the rapidly increasing range of digital solutions in the management of water installations in the water chain. In this way, a positive influence is exerted on the living environment and society. The linear actuator supplied by BIBUS is used to drive the automatic level control of the level-controlled drainage system.

By increasing the discharge level during drought, precipitation is retained. The intelligent drainage system ensures that this precipitation is only drained from a certain level. Because the water level drops with the growth of the crop, the crop is prevented from becoming lazy and thus strong root growth is promoted. The test setup is well shown in the video below. The actuator ensures that the discharge level can be adjusted in height.

Side effects of retaining fresh water in the subsurface are the reduction of salt seepage in coastal areas (which improves soil quality) and the replenishment of the groundwater level during long dry periods.

The actuator and the level control tube

the level control tube is the heart of the intelligent level-controlled drainage system. With the electrically controlled bellows with, the drainage level of the drainage is automatically controlled with a range of 0.50m. In the highest position, a stop can be mounted, so that the drain can be closed off to build up extra pressure during the supply of water in the form of sub-irrigation.

The maintenance-free level control pipe is simply placed on the discharge bend of the level-controlled drainage system and is made from recycled PVC pipe. The control, which works remotely, makes this unit a smart Internet of Things device with which to measure and control. The unique advantage of using a level control unit is that the drain is always available from the set level and that the functioning is visible.

Actuators

Actuators are used in applications that require tilting, lifting, pulling or pushing with a maximum force of up to 10,000 N. The actuator used for the intelligent level-controlled drainage is a Bansbach EasyE-35 with a stroke of 500. In addition to the steel powder-coated version, this actuator is also available as a stainless steel version.

Are you unsure about the right actuator for your application? You can contact the specialists of BIBUSwithout obligation to receive tailor-made advice. Another option that allows you to compare multiple solutions is to order the actuator sample case. This way you will quickly become familiar with the various possibilities of Bansbach easyE actuators.
