BIBUS in practice: actuators for operating roof pickup camper

BIBUS' linear electric actuators are finding their way into an increasingly diverse range of applications. The ease of use, reliability and compactness of the models with integrated controls makes them an interesting alternative to gas springs, pneumatics and hydraulic cylinders. This article discusses one such application.

Central to this practical application is the pickup camper of Frank de Grauw. BIBUS was allowed to help solve problems related to the lifting roof of the camper.

The problem

Before the linear electric actuators were implemented, hydraulic cylinders operated the lifting roof. The hydraulic cylinders were able to open the sunroof by using the upward force. But, lowering the roof was not always smooth.

To prevent further problems, Frank de Grauw decided to replace the hydraulic cylinders with linear actuators, also from the German brand Bansbach.

The solution: electric linear actuators

The hydraulic cylinders were replaced with four linear actuators with integrated controls (easyE-35i). These products have several advantages over hydraulic cylinders. First of all, actuators have the same upward and downward force. This makes the lifting roof open as smoothly as it is closed.

In addition, the actuators have a cascade system. This makes synchronous control possible, resulting in even smoother movements of the roof.

Actuators with integrated control

The actuators chosen belong to the series with integrated control, the in-line easyE-i models. With the help of the controller, these actuators can be controlled individually, or fully synchronized, via the serial port RS485 connection on, for example, the 'plug and play' iConnect-Box by means of Modbus.

An additional advantage of this new concept is that the actuators have become as compact as the conventional actuators with hall sensor. This is due to the elimination of the external controller, as it is now integrated into the actuator. Especially in applications where space is a decisive factor, as with the lifting roof in question, the actuators provide the right solution.

"The system is now functioning well, it has been tested in the cold Scottish weather and is working properly." says the satisfied Frank de Grauw. "The integrated control system made the installation easy and quick to do."

Linear actuators from Bansbach

The actuators with integrated control, like the classic models, are available in three lines: the easyE-35i (constant force up to 2,200 N), the easyE-50i (up to 4,500 N) and the easyE-60i (up to 10,000 N).

All easyE-i models can be supplied with cable lengths of 1-9 meters, internal stroke limitation, adjustable overcurrent protection, internal heat protection and various end connectors, such as eyes, clevises and spherical bearings. Furthermore, a version in stainless steel 316, powder-coated black steel or in a RAL color of your choice can be chosen. The easyE-i actuators can be easily adjusted with the available software during installation or after maintenance.
