High-quality components make the difference in machine and equipment construction, this especially goes for the medical world. In this sector, component reliability is of enormous importance. Especially when these products are aimed at one of the most vulnerable groups: newborn babies.

This product application focuses on one such example: the role played by Bansbach's gas springs in the Concord Birth Trolley by Concord Neonatal.

About Concord Neonatal

Leiden-based Concord Neonatal was founded to help babies and parents win in the first minutes of life outside the womb. The company is aimed at helping those who are born prematurely or those who need extra support.

Concord does this by designing and manufacturing products that give babies a 'shock-free birth'. The company does this together with scientists, caregivers and parents around the world. This has resulted in the development of the Concord Birth Trolley.

The Concord Birth Trolley

The Concord Birth Trolley is a mobile trolley that can be equipped with all the necessary equipment for monitoring and treating babies who need extra support.

This eliminates the urgency of cutting the umbilical cord; all necessary care can be provided immediately, even before the umbilical cord is cut. The child thus benefits from the blood still in the placenta for as long as possible. Only when the baby is completely stable and able to breathe on its own, the umbilical is cord cut.

The Concord Birth Trolley has a uniquely shaped Cradle with a patented opening for the umbilical cord and is mounted on a height-adjustable and swivelling arm, which offers a lot of freedom to position the baby very close to mum.

The baby, whether it is a very premature or a full-term newborn, can be placed safely on the Cradle,  even with a very short umbilical cord connected. Mom can see and touch her baby.

The application of Bansbach gas springs

The gas springs supplied by BIBUS play a crucial role in this process. For the delivery doctor, it is important to be able to easily position the Cradle just above mother, with a good feel and little force.

The Cradle and the associated radiant warmer are too heavy to achieve this without support. Concord Neonatal was looking for a solution that gives the Cradle's structure constant support, as linear as possible, during height displacement and keeps it at the chosen height position immediately after displacement. Preferably, the solution functions independently of external energy.

In this process, BIBUS was able to advise for chosen gas spring, which provides a support precisely tailored to the weight of the structure This makes the movement much smoother and lighter than without the gas spring.

In addition, the gas spring features a mechanical blocking that keeps the structure in position. This solution always functions, even when the Concord Birth Trolley is not connected to the mains. This functionality provides extra safety just when it is important.
